Did I mention that Actuan created the Advertising News Portal? It’s how I keep up with advertising news without visiting every site known to man. Take a look at it. Anyhow, it’s where I came across this story from MarketingVox. In it, they cover Pepsi’s designourpepsican.com. Pepsi is allowing people like you and me (hopefully with a bit more artistic talent than me) to compete against each other to design Pepsi cans. Pepsi will have 35 different versions of the Pepsi can this year, so the article says. Yours could be one of them.
Seems to me that this is a great way to engage customers. I’m a Coke man, myself, but I’ll probably find myself trying to design a Pepsi can (don’t be surprised to see the Actuan logo on it). This type of contest grabs people, endears the brand to them and gets you helps Pepsi understand what people think of the Pepsi brand. Even the ideas that don’t appear on the site give Pepsi a clearer picture of consumers’ perceptions of Pepsi. What Pepsi could do to make the site better is provide forums or a “Talk About This Can” link where the designers and other site users can discuss their cans — and help Pepsi really see how people felt about its brand. Nice effort, though… Go ahead and visit the site. Take a look at the really cool cans in the showcase and maybe even create your own.
