Side Note : The Passing of Senator Kennedy and the End of a Dynasty

Senator Kennedy, 2008 DNC Convention

I’m in my mid-thirties so I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t a Senator Ted Kennedy. To my mind, he’s always been there to champion the voice of voiceless and to use his significant influence to protect the unprotected. Our nation mourns the loss of a great man and, it seems, a political dynasty.

There are life lessons to be found by studying the Kennedys. The family suffered numerous tragedies. Each of the Senator Kennedy’s brothers died a violent death, two by assassination, one during World War II. One sister died in a plane crash and another was rendered an invalid after a lobotomy. Wikipedia does a better job listing the tragedies than I ever could. My point is that the Kennedys kept building in spite of the challenges and obstacles that faced them. For Senator Kennedy to do so much in spite of the great loss that surrounded him is a testament to the power of persevering.

One other life lesson is manifested by the dynasty itself. The Kennedys have been the most influential political family in America for a very long time, but they built the dynasty brick by brick. The patriarch of the Kennedy family, Ted’s grandfather and a first generation American, started by getting involved in his local Democratic party. His son got involved in politics and each Kennedy who entered the political arena built upon the foundation laid by those that came before him. The result is a family who has a had a profound impact on our country.

Persevering in spite of the challenges you face and building upon the foundation of those who came before you are both large components of the American dream. They’re also key to the Kennedy’s success and it’s no wonder their family so epitomizes the American dream.

Farewell, Senator Kennedy. You will be missed but you and your family’s example will remain with us forever.
